The SOFeX Expedition
Only applies to grad class with Mr. Young on Friday, Nov. 2. Please ignore this post exploratorium students.
1. Read the overview of the SOFeX project:
Overview
Purpose
2. Discuss the following questions:
- What is the aim of the SOFeX Project?
- What specific questions do you think scientists will seek to answer during the cruise?
- how do you think scientists will go about their investigations during the cruise?
- how will the results of this cruise help scientists understand the global carbon cycle, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and climate control?
3. Explore the Cruise logbook, and the equipment and people pages:
Logbook
Equipment
People
4. Complete the SOFeX Cruise information sheet.
5. Have each group prepare a "request for funding" brochure for the SOFeX Cruise, using information they have found throughout their investigation. Students should include information on goals, rationale and purpose of the cruise; questions to be investigated; equipment and technology; and people involved.

The Nutrient Cycle (Friday, November 2 only)
This post only applies for students taking the Nutrition Cycles class with me on Friday, Nov. 2. Exploratorium students please ignore this post.
The Carbon Cycle
Watch: NASA: Keeping up with Carbon
Answer the following questions while watching the video:
1. Where is carbon stored in the world?
2. Describe through a diagram how carbon is exchanged on land between plants, animals, and soil.
3. Write down three important facts about carbon in oceans.
4. Describe the role of phytoplankton in the carbon cycle.
5. Use a diagram to describe the process of upwelling.
6. Describe the relationship between oceans and climate change.
7. How are humans negatively impacting carbon levels?
8. How do warmer ocean waters affect the carbon cycle and marine ecosystems?
9. How are scientists monitoring carbon levels?

Bring supplies to decorate a poster
Hey guys. We'll be looking at atoms and molecules this week. You will start making a 3D molecule poster in class on Monday, and it would be great if you could brink some supplies - markers, pencil crayons, scissors, rulers etc.
I know this is a last minute message, so don't worry if you don't get it in time.
Thanks,
Mr. Young

Ideas for Chemical Reactions Demosntration
Bill Nye the Science Guy
This site has many ideas for all branches of science. Focus in on the chemistry demonstrations that are listed.
Science Bob
This site explains the demonstrations quite well. Go through the list but choose an experiment where a chemical reactions is taking place (remember the difference between a chemical reactions and physical reaction we discussed in week 2).
Science is Fun
A lot of fun demonstrations that can be done in the home. The demonstrations with red cabbage, chemiluminescence, removing tarnish, gluep, making things glow in the dark, fizzing and foaming are all chemical reactions.
